Brick Masonry Contractor in Toronto and the GTA

Brick masonry is what we do most. The trade is older than the wheel, and most of the work has not changed in any way that matters. A mason still sets brick on mortar, plumbs the wall, ties it back to the structure, and lets it cure. Most masonry companies in the GTA either build or restore. We do both, and our masonry work covers everything from a single chimney repair to a full Toronto masonry restoration. What has changed is the surrounding ecosystem of standards, mortar science, and code requirements. We build, repair, and restore brick masonry across Toronto and the GTA, working on residential walls, heritage facades in Cabbagetown and the Annex, commercial restorations, chimneys, sills, lintels, and fireplaces. We do not handle gas, drywall, or roofing. We are a brick-and-stone trade, and brick is the larger half of that.

What we do as brick masonry contractors

Brick work splits into five lanes. Most weeks we run two or three concurrently:

  • New brick construction. Walls, facades, partitions, garden walls, chimneys, fireplace surrounds, brick walkway edges and pillars. Foundation up. The masonry service is built around clean workmanship and proper detailing.
  • Brick restoration. Repointing, brick replacement, full facade rebuilds on heritage Toronto homes.
  • Brick repair. Spalled face replacement. Lintel rust-jacking remediation. Settlement crack rebuild.
  • Window sills and lintels. These two fail together on pre-1990 Toronto houses, so we pair them whenever scope allows.
  • Tuckpointing and repointing. Joint by joint, on walls, chimneys, parapets. NHL5 or Type N depending on the brick.

Could be a Cabbagetown heritage repointing on Monday. An Etobicoke chimney rebuild on Tuesday. A new Mississauga garden wall by Friday. Same trade, same standards, different elevations.

Brick types and where each one fits

The word “brick” covers a half-dozen distinct products with different specifications, mechanical properties, and use cases. Choosing wrong is how walls fail in their second decade.

Standard clay face brick (ASTM C216). The product 90 percent of GTA residential work uses. Solid or cored, fired clay, modular dimensions (roughly 7.5 by 2.25 by 3.5 inches). Brampton Brick, Glen-Gery, Cooksville stock — red, brown, grey, charcoal, white, multicolour. Wall service life: a century-plus when built right.

Engineering brick (ASTM C652). Higher compressive strength (typically 70+ MPa). Tighter tolerances. Lower water absorption. Used where structural performance carries the spec: load-bearing walls, retaining wall elements, foundations.

Salvage and reclaimed brick. Pre-1930 Toronto houses used Don Valley Brick Works red almost exclusively until the works closed in 1989. Cap Brick Vintage, Bowman Masonry, and Arcana Materials carry period-correct salvage stock for restoration matching. Slightly more expensive but indistinguishable from the original.

Oversize and Roman brick. Custom dimensions used for design-driven applications: thin Roman brick (16 by 4 inches) for contemporary exteriors, oversize for fast wall construction.

Glazed brick. Ceramic-coated face for commercial interiors and feature walls. Easy to clean, distinctive look. Sourced from specialty distributors in the GTA.

Refractory firebrick (ASTM C27). Specifically for firebox lining inside fireplaces. Not interchangeable with face brick. Rated 1700 to 2000 °F continuous service.

The right brick depends on exposure, structural role, and aesthetic. We bring samples on the second visit so you see the actual material, not a photo.

Mortar specs and why they matter

Mortar is not one-size-fits-all. ASTM C270 covers the four common Portland mortar types:

  • Type M. Highest strength (17.2 MPa), used for foundations, retaining walls, structural masonry below grade.
  • Type S. Strong (12.4 MPa), used for load-bearing exterior walls and parging.
  • Type N. Medium strength (5.2 MPa), used for above-grade non-load-bearing brick — most residential face brick.
  • Type O. Low strength (2.4 MPa), used for interior non-load-bearing repair and historical work where Type N would still be too hard.

The big trap on Toronto heritage homes: Portland mortar of any type is too hard for soft pre-1930 clay brick. NHL5 hydraulic lime mortar is the right call for repointing or repair on Cabbagetown, Annex, Riverdale, and Roncesvalles brick houses. How we run a brick masonry project

Sequence varies by scope, but the cadence is consistent:

1. Site visit and assessment. We look at the existing condition, scope the work, identify code triggers.

2. Quote. Per linear foot, per square foot, or per project depending on what makes sense. Itemized.

3. Permit. OBC Section 9.20 covers masonry construction; structural changes trigger a building permit. We file it, you sign.

4. Build or repair. Clean, prep, mortar, set, point, tool, cure.

5. Walk-through. Standards we worked to, what to watch for in the first year, scheduled check-in at the one-year mark for any settling.

Heritage and Toronto brick history

Named landmarks tell the story. Casa Loma in Spadina. Massey Hall. Osgoode Hall. The Don Valley Brick Works itself. Most of those buildings used local Don Valley red. The works closed in 1989 after a century of production, and pre-1930 Toronto residential brick (Cabbagetown, the Annex, Riverdale, Roncesvalles, Leslieville) almost all came from Don Valley or Cooksville. Frequently asked questions

What sets brick masonry apart from concrete or stone?

Brick is modular, repairable, and outlasts most concrete and stucco systems. A brick wall built today should still be functional in 100 years; concrete block needs face protection in 50; stucco needs replacement around 30. Brick also weathers visibly without losing structural integrity.

How long does brick masonry last in Toronto's climate?

Properly built clay brick on Type N mortar lasts a century-plus before any major work. Mortar joints need attention every 30 to 50 years. Heritage walls in Cabbagetown laid in 1900 are still functional today where original lime mortar has been preserved.

Do you handle small repair jobs or only large projects?

Both. Single-brick replacements, hairline crack repair, and small tuckpointing scopes are part of weekly work. We prefer customers we can return to for the next thing rather than one-off large jobs only.

Is your work permitted under OBC?

Yes. Any structural masonry triggers a permit under Ontario Building Code Section 9.20. We file the permit and sign with the homeowner. Cosmetic repointing on a residential wall usually does not require a permit; we confirm scope on the first visit.
