Stone Cladding Installation in Toronto and the GTA
Stone cladding is the surface layer of stone applied to a structural wall behind it. The wall carries the load. The cladding handles weather, gives the building its character, and (when the substrate work is done right) lasts a century. We install stone cladding on residential and small-commercial projects across Toronto and the GTA, from heritage limestone refacing in Cabbagetown to whole-house veneer cladding on new builds in Mississauga, Vaughan, Oakville, and Markham. The trade is straightforward when standards are followed. CSA A371 sets the requirements; we follow them on every install.
What stone cladding actually does
Stone cladding serves three jobs at once. First job: weather. It sheds water off the wall, breaks the wind, and keeps the structural sheathing dry behind it. Second: thermal mass and a small insulation gain (effective R-value bump in the 1 to 2 range). Third: character. Natural stone reads as substantial in a way fibre-cement, vinyl, or stucco never will.
The critical distinction is structural versus cladding. Full-bed stone (4 inches or thicker) carrying its own load on its own foundation is masonry construction. Cladding is the skin layer over a separate structural wall. ASTM C1242 covers cladding installation. ASTM C1670 covers manufactured cladding product. Most modern installs use both standards together.
Stone cladding materials we install
Three categories cover almost every cladding job in the GTA. Each has its own ASTM standard, weight class, cost band, and lifespan.
Full-bed natural stone cladding. Quarried stone, 4 inches or thicker. Mortar set, brick ties anchor to a structural backer. Limestone, granite, sandstone. Weight: 35 to 50 pounds per square foot. The cladding option that lasts effectively forever in Toronto’s climate. Used for heritage matching, monumental commercial work, and high-end residential where structural mass matters. Standards: ASTM C568 limestone, ASTM C615 granite, ASTM C616 sandstone. The foundation has to carry the load. New builds spec the foundation accordingly.
Thin natural stone cladding (veneer products). Real quarried stone cut to 1 to 1.5 inches thick. Same material as full-bed, engineered to bond to a substrate without structural support. Often supplied as stone panels or thin slabs, including stone siding cut from premium high-quality blocks. Weight: 5 to 15 pounds per square foot. Service life matches full-bed because the material is identical. The most common modern residential cladding choice. Selection runs across nearly every limestone, granite, and sandstone tone available, and the product blends well with brick and timber on mixed elevations.
Manufactured stone cladding (cultured stone). Portland cement cast in moulds. Iron-oxide pigments give it natural stone colour. ASTM C1670. Weight: 4 to 8 pounds per square foot. Service life: 25 to 50 years before pigment fades and surface erodes. GTA-stocked brands: Boral, Eldorado Stone, Cultured Stone (Owens Corning), ProVia, Versetta. Roughly half the cost of natural. The lifetime cost gap closes considerably across a 50-year ownership horizon, since the natural stone never gets replaced.
The right choice depends on the building era, the structural framing, and the budget. Heritage matching and monumental commercial projects use full-bed; residential almost always uses thin or cultured.
Interior and exterior stone cladding applications
Cladding scopes split neatly:
- Exterior whole-house cladding. Full envelope from foundation to soffit. Typical 1500-3000 sq ft on a Toronto detached home.
- Exterior partial cladding. Foundation skirt, gable ends, accent panels around windows or entries.
- Interior accent walls. Living room feature walls, fireplace surrounds, hotel-lobby-style entry walls. Same thin or cultured product as exterior, no weather concerns.
- Commercial exterior. Office building cladding, retail facades, hospitality. Same standards apply, larger scale.
- Heritage refacing. Restoration of original limestone or sandstone elevations on Cabbagetown, Annex, and Riverdale homes. Salvage matching required, especially on continuous stone wall runs across older Ontario heritage facades.
How we install stone cladding step by step
CSA A371 sets the requirements. The sequence below is what we follow:
1. Substrate inspection. Sheathing must be fastened correctly. No soft spots. No rot. Replace boards where needed before anything else happens.
2. Water-resistive barrier (WRB). Two layers of Grade D paper, or a high-perm housewrap such as Tyvek or Typar. This becomes the drainage plane behind the cladding.
3. Drainage mat. A 6 to 10 mm dimpled mat goes behind the lath. Toronto code requires this on most cladding installs now. Without it, water that finds a way past the stone cannot escape, and freeze-thaw cycles tear the wall apart from the inside.
4. Galvanized metal lath. Mechanically fastened through the mat into framing studs. Stainless lath in coastal exposures, but for the GTA, hot-dip galvanized is standard.
5. Scratch coat. Type N or Type S Portland mortar (ASTM C270) keyed into the lath. Cures 48 to 72 hours.
6. Setting bed. Polymer-modified Type S mortar buttered to the back of each piece. Pressed into the scratch coat.
7. Joints. 3/8 to 1/2 inch joints, grouted with colour-matched mortar. Some thin natural stone is set tight (no joints).
8. Weep holes and kick-out flashing. At every horizontal interruption — window heads, deck connections, roof intersections. Not optional.
9. Cleanup. Acid wash where mortar smears appear. Soft brush otherwise.
A whole-house exterior cladding job typically runs 3 to 6 weeks for a Toronto two-storey, depending on weather and access conditions.

Two-storey scaffold adds $1,500 to $4,500 depending on duration and access. Full-bed cladding requires a structural review before any quote.
Heritage and commercial cladding
Cabbagetown, the Annex, and Riverdale heritage homes often have original full-bed stone elevations. Restoration scopes (NHL5 lime repointing, dutchman repair, full elevation refacing with salvage stock) follow Heritage Preservation Services and Parks Canada standards. Frequently asked questions
Stone cladding versus stone veneer siding — are they the same thing?
Roughly yes. Cladding is the broader term that covers full-bed, thin natural, and manufactured product. Veneer siding usually refers to the thin natural and manufactured products specifically. We use the terms interchangeably on quotes and clarify the actual product on the spec.
Will stone cladding crack in Toronto winters?
Cultured cladding can spall and crack if the drainage plane behind it is missing or if flashing fails. Natural thin and full-bed cladding rarely cracks because the material is identical to full masonry. Substrate prep, not the stone, decides longevity.
Can I clad over an existing exterior wall?
Sometimes. The wall has to be structurally sound and the existing siding cleanly removable. Wood lap and fibre-cement usually come off; aluminum and stucco depend on condition. We inspect at the first visit.
Do you handle large commercial cladding projects?
