Natural stone veneer in Toronto
Stone veneer is a thin layer of natural or manufactured stone applied over an existing wall. You get the look of a solid stone wall without the weight or the cost. The structure underneath does the heavy lifting; the veneer handles the appearance.
We install stone veneer on homes and commercial buildings across the Greater Toronto Area. Exterior facades, interior accent walls, fireplace surrounds, outdoor kitchens, commercial lobbies. The material works in a lot of places because it is lighter than full-depth stone and can go over concrete, block, or wood framing.
Natural vs. manufactured
Natural stone veneer is real stone, cut thin — usually 20 to 40 mm thick. Each piece has its own colour variation and texture. Limestone, granite, slate, and sandstone are the most common. It costs more than manufactured, but the look is hard to replicate.
Manufactured stone veneer is concrete cast in moulds to look like real stone. The colour is added during production, so you get consistent pieces that are lighter and easier to cut. It covers large areas faster and costs less per square metre. Quality products hold up well in Ontario’s climate, though cheaper ones can fade over time.
We install both. The choice usually comes down to budget, the area you’re covering, and how important the natural stone look is to you.
Where it works
Stone veneer goes on more than just the front of the house. We’ve installed it on:
- Exterior facades — full house or accent sections around entries and garage
- Interior feature walls in living rooms, kitchens, basements
- Retaining walls and garden borders
- Outdoor kitchens and barbecue surrounds
- Commercial storefronts and lobby walls
- Columns, archways, and pillars
For full exterior coverage, veneer siding adds a layer of weather protection on top of the curb appeal. It works on wood-frame, steel-frame, and concrete structures — we assess the substrate and adjust the installation method accordingly.
How we install it
Installation quality determines how long the veneer lasts. Cut corners here and you get moisture behind the stone, cracked mortar, pieces falling off after a couple of winters.
We start by inspecting the substrate — concrete, block, or wood framing — and preparing it with a moisture barrier and metal lath. Then we dry-fit stones on the ground to plan the colour distribution and joint spacing. This step prevents colour clustering, where all the dark pieces end up in one spot.
Each stone gets back-buttered with mortar and set onto the wall from the bottom up. Joints are filled, tooled, and cleaned before the mortar sets. For porous stones like limestone that will be exposed to rain and snow, we apply a breathable sealer to protect against moisture absorption and salt damage.
A standard residential project — say, the front facade of a two-storey house — takes about five to ten business days depending on the stone type and wall condition.
Materials we use
Limestone is our go-to for most exterior work in the GTA. Clean lines, warm tones, and it handles freeze-thaw cycles well. Granite is tougher to work with but essentially indestructible — we use it on ground-level applications and high-traffic areas. Slate has a layered texture that works well on contemporary homes. Sandstone gives you softer, warmer colours that look good on garden walls and landscape features.
For manufactured options, we install cultured stone, faux stone panels, and pre-assembled stone cladding systems. These cover large areas quickly and keep costs down on bigger commercial projects.
Ledgestone is worth mentioning separately. It has a linear, stacked profile that creates a lot of visual depth. Popular on fireplaces, accent walls, and outdoor kitchens.
Maintenance
Stone veneer does not need much attention once it is installed properly. Clean it with mild soap and water — avoid pressure washing, which loosens mortar joints. Check the joints once a year, especially after winter, and repoint anything that is cracking or missing before moisture gets behind the stone.
If you have natural stone in an exposed location, reseal it every three to five years. Catching small problems early — a cracked joint, a loose stone — saves you from bigger repairs later.
We also do brick veneer installations if you prefer a brick look over stone.
