Stone Services in Toronto and Across the GTA
Stone work is the older half of our trade. Brick goes back to the wheel; stone goes further still. The methods have evolved, but the basics have not. A skilled craftsman still selects, shapes, and sets stone on mortar (or sets it dry), reading each piece for its bedding plane and fit to the wall around it. We specialize in stone work, and the craftsmanship and precision a working stonemason brings to a wall are not replaceable by general construction crews. First consultation runs through scope, stone selection, and mortar choice. We run stone services across Toronto and the GTA on residential and small commercial projects: cladding, walls, walkways, fireplaces, mantels, sills, restoration, and heritage matching. This page is the top-level overview. Specific scopes — fireplace, sill, cladding, veneer, retaining wall, armour stone, flagstone — live on dedicated pages linked below.
What our stone services include
Stone work breaks into nine recurring scopes for us:
- Stone cladding. Full-bed and thin-veneer cladding on residential and commercial exteriors. ASTM C568 limestone, ASTM C615 granite, ASTM C616 sandstone. CSA A371 cladding compliance.
- Stone veneer and stone veneer siding. 1 to 1.5 inch thin natural stone or cultured (manufactured) veneer. Boral, Eldorado, Cultured Stone, ProVia, Versetta brands stocked across the GTA.
- Stone walls. Retaining walls, garden walls, freestanding walls, armour stone gravity walls. Indoor and outdoor scope.
- Stone fireplaces and mantels. Wood-burning fireboxes with natural stone surrounds. Carved limestone or marble mantels. ASTM C27 firebrick lining, ASTM C199 refractory mortar.

Stone types we work with daily
Five stones cover almost every residential and small-commercial project across the GTA:
Limestone. ASTM C568. The heritage benchmark and the most common GTA pick. Indiana limestone (Royal Bank tower, Old City Hall) for premium scope. Eramosa from southern Ontario for grey-cream contemporary builds. Wiarton dolomite for hard, freeze-thaw-resistant walls.
Granite. ASTM C615. Hardest of the five. Lowest water absorption (0.4 percent). Effectively immune to freeze-thaw. Black, charcoal, grey, brown, pink colour ranges. Used on contemporary builds and high-traffic walkways.
Sandstone. ASTM C616. Owen Sound Ledgerock is the classic Ontario sandstone, warm tan to honey colour. Slightly more porous than the limestones. Sealed at install. Common on Annex and Roncesvalles heritage homes.
Marble. ASTM C503. Rare for exterior in Toronto’s climate. Acid rain and freeze-thaw both attack the surface. We use it indoors on mantels and feature walls. Outside only under deep overhangs.
Quartzite (Tennessee variegated). Multicolour with reds, browns, greys, sometimes purple. Hardest of the five. Premium pricing on distinctive flagstone work.
We bring sample pieces to the second visit. Photos do not capture texture or colour variation honestly; every stone reads differently in actual light.
Why stone outlasts most other building finishes
Stone is denser than brick and far less porous than fibre-cement, vinyl, or stucco. A 4-inch full-bed natural stone cladding wall has a service life measured in centuries — the original limestone on Old City Hall has been in service since 1899 and is still functional today where heritage repointing has been done correctly. Stone veneer matches that life because the material is the same; only the thickness changes. Manufactured cultured stone runs 25 to 50 years before pigment fades and surface erodes. Toronto’s climate (30 to 50 freeze-thaw cycles per season, January averages near −7 °C per Environment Canada) destroys hollow assemblies and lower-grade products in 25 to 40 years. Real stone laid to spec, with appropriate mortar and detailing, is effectively maintenance-free for the first century.
Heritage and Toronto stone history
Named Toronto landmarks built largely from local and imported stone. Casa Loma in Spadina, Scottish-cut sandstone. Old City Hall, Credit Valley sandstone. The Royal Bank tower at Bloor and Yonge, Indiana limestone. Heritage residential stonework in Cabbagetown, the Annex, Riverdale, Roncesvalles, and Leslieville often uses original Indiana, Eramosa, or Owen Sound stock paired with Don Valley brick. The Don Valley works closed in 1989 after a century of production. On heritage scopes we work to Parks Canada and Toronto Heritage Preservation Services standards. The documentation we produce satisfies HCD permit reviewers. National Park Service Brief 2 covers the mortar-vs-stone hardness physics every heritage scope depends on.

Stone cladding is a popular architectural technique used to enhance the look and durability of buildings by applying a thin layer of stone to a surface. This method, also known as stone veneer, has become a go-to solution for both exterior and interior design, offering the charm of natural stone without the cost and weight of full-sized blocks.
A brief history of stone cladding
Stone cladding dates back to ancient civilizations where masonry was used to create durable and impressive structures. As construction methods evolved, so did the approach to stone. Today, wall cladding allows designers to achieve the same solid stone wall aesthetic with much lighter and easier-to-install materials.
Where stone cladding is used
Modern stone cladding is seen in a variety of architectural contexts—from residential homes to commercial buildings. It’s commonly used on the facade, accent walls, fireplaces, and garden features. Whether it’s for an exterior stone siding or a textured interior panel, cladding adds depth and character.
Cladding is especially valued in places like Canada, where climate resilience is key. Materials such as limestone, sandstone, and granite are favored for their strength and rich texture. Homeowners often install cladding as siding or stack panels to create a natural, layered style.
Natural Materials and Tones for Exterior Stone Wall Cladding
Different types of natural stone offer a wide array of colours and tones—from warm beige sandstone to sleek grey granite, rustic brick tones, and soft cream limestone. Each panel is unique, shaped by the conditions of its origin in the quarry. These materials not only offer visual appeal but also stand the test of time.
The Benefits and Installation of Natural Stone Cladding for Timeless Natural Beauty
Stone cladding is designed for easy installation. With advances in technology, modern systems allow for secure mounting on a variety of surfaces. Whether enhancing a stone wall or updating an older facade, cladding brings lasting beauty and structural integrity.
Types of Stonework Services Offered by StoneMasonryToronto

Frequently asked questions
Stone or brick — which one should I pick?
Brick for budget-conscious projects and modular looks. Stone for monumental presence, contemporary builds, or heritage matching. Most GTA projects mix the two: brick body with stone accents (foundation skirt, gable, sills, fireplace surround). We talk through the trade-off on the first visit.
How much does stone work cost in the GTA?
Stone veneer cladding $40 to $85 per square foot installed. Full-bed natural stone cladding $90 to $200. Carved stone mantels $5,000 to $18,000. Heritage repointing $20 to $40 per square foot. Specific ranges live on each per-scope service page.
Will stone hold up in Toronto's climate?
Properly selected stone (limestone, granite, dolomite, sealed sandstone) lasts 75 to 100 years before any meaningful maintenance. Wrong-mortar choice on heritage stone is the biggest risk, not the stone itself. We use NHL5 lime mortar on pre-1930 walls.
Do you handle small stone repairs or only large projects?
Both. Single-sill repairs, dutchman repair on heritage elevations, hairline crack repointing, small accent feature installs — all part of weekly work. We prefer ongoing relationships over one-off large jobs only.
